Wow! What a Week!
Hi friends,
Wow! What a week! We officially opened the farm for strawberry picking with a ribbon cutting on Monday. Waller Family Farms, who isn’t growing strawberries this year, posted on Facebook that people should try out Heeks Farm. We were featured in the Raleigh N&O newspaper on Wednesday in the annual PYO strawberry farm roundup. I really appreciate everyone’s patience as we iron out the kinks in our operation. Let’s talk about Saturday!
We will be open for strawberry picking on Saturday from 8am till we're picked out. We’re letting the fields rest today, Friday April 25th, to make sure we’ll have plenty of berries available for Saturday. We’ll be open at 8am on Saturday. It’s looking like a great day.
We started using the flag system this week for efficient picking as suggested by Mark Waller. It seemed to work pretty well, so I’ll be utilizing that system on Saturday. Many of you are experienced strawberry pickers, and I can tell that by looking at the berries in your basket. When picking strawberries you want to make sure the berry is completely red. No white tips, or white shoulders. If it’s got orange parts, it’s not ripe. Completely red. The whole point of a PYO strawberry is to get the freshest, ripest, juiciest berry possible. They’re in the field, you just need to come pick them.
I hope to see you Saturday.
Your Farmer,
David Heeks
